Services and history

We are an active and friendly parish Church in the City of Newport and are part of the Church in Wales, an Anglican church. We are seeking to grow as a vibrant church for people of all ages. Our parish life, worship and mission bring an inclusive mix of traditional and contemporary approaches – we are aiming to develop with something for all people and all ages as we worship God and seek to follow Jesus Christ. We are committed to an exciting future with new and energetic leadership through the Heart of Newport Ministry Area.

Our church building

St Marks is a beautiful Victorian Gothic style Church in central Newport, opened and consecrated in 1874. The Church was built by Habershon’s, a local firm of architects, who were also responsible for the Victorian restoration of Newport Cathedral (then St Woolos' Church) in the late 1800s. It has an elegant tower which has both a rose window with fine tracery and a well-wrought quarterly chiming clock. Works of art include beautifully quilted banners depicting the life of St Mark designed and worked by members of the congregation. There are a series of lovely stained glass windows dating from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Victorian Connacher Organ has been restored and augmented by Nicholson’s of Great Malvern.

More recent work has included extensive restoration to the roof and stonework as well as the process of removing pews to be substituted with chairs as this allows flexibility in the use of the nave. The church is used not only for worship but is clearly available to the community at large . Major work on the tower in 2023-2024 has ensured the building will continue to be used for the decades to come.
